My Most Memorable Birthday

We ended up going to a surprise 50th birthday party for one of our friends on Saturday night and she really enjoyed herself.  It’s such a fun night when you have all of your closest friends and family around to celebrate your big day with you. It got me a bit nostalgic as I tried to think back to my most memorable birthday.

I’ve had some really good birthdays including two surprise parties on my 16th and 41st birthday’s but unfortunately the one that is most memorable is for unpleasant reasons.  It happened to be my 39th birthday on January 5, 2009.
The short version of the story is that we (the five of us) were just wrapping up a ten day visit to Tunisia to visit my sister and her family who were in the midst of a two year stint in Northern Africa.  It was a wonderful trip and a once in a life time experience.
We were scheduled to fly home to the United States that day.  Our first flight from Tunis to Paris went without any glitches and the fun didn’t begin until after we boarded our flight from Paris to Philadelphia as snow began to fall.  After sitting on the plane for over three hours we were taken off the plane and that’s where the adventure began in earnest.
By the time it was done, we had spent hours in line without anything to eat and had spent the night sleeping on the floor in the Charles De Gaulle Airport.  From the time we left Tunis and arrived at home it had taken over 45 hours.  We were dirty, grungy, exhausted and miserable.  We came home without our bags, which eventually arrived but with some things stolen out of them.

It was a crappy ending to what had been our first family trip overseas.
